David E. Shannon passed suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. He was born in Mount Sterling, Ohio to the late Mary Ellen and Russell Shannon. He graduated Class of 1974 from Westfall High School where he was an active member of the football team and Future Farmers of America. He graduated Class of 1978 from Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a wide receiver on the Battling Bishops football team, a brother of the FiJi fraternity, and received a Bachelor’s degree in Botany.
He went on to marry his best friend and the love of his life, Lisa (Martin) Shannon and raise two beautiful daughters, then later on a grandson. Dave and Lisa were lovingly married for 42 years.
As a fourth-generation dairy farmer, he was so proud of how his farm, The Shannon’s Grain and Dairy”, had grown over time and how he was able to work so closely with his best friend Artie Dick.
Dave was a member of the Free Masons, Mount Sterling Lodge #269. He was an advisor of the local Derby Find and Dandy 4H Club where he mentored many young people, especially the Shannon’s Dairy Show Staff. They showed Holstein cows each summer at the Pickaway County Fair. He also enjoyed summers on Lake Erie with his family, smoking cigars and playing “Name That Tune.”
Dave was also an elected member of the Advisory Board at his church, Grove City Church of the Nazarene. His church was the most important community to him; there was nothing he wouldn’t do for his church! He dearly loved the Upward Basketball league where he served as the Coach Coordinator for over 15 years! He believed in the importance of Outreach & Sports Ministries. Dave weekly gave countless hours building relationships, encouraging families and discipling all ages throughout our community.
Jordan’s Crossing Columbus was very dear to Dave’s heart; he coordinated countless community meals to feed those in need.
Through the help of the Lord and his church friends, Dave reached thousands of people around Columbus who needed to find hope, receive treatment, and ultimately obtain a healthier future!
He believed his greatest accomplishment in life was becoming a grandfather. He was adamant that after selling the farm he was not retiring, he was repurposed. He went on the become a full-time Pepaw to his best little dude, Rusty. The moment Rusty came into our lives Dave declared that forever more Rusty would always remain at the top of the pyramid. Everything he did was for that precious, little boy and they loved each other dearly! They were the best of friends.
Dave was Pepaw/Dad/Husband/Coach/Dr. Fun and filled many other roles. He was a larger-than-life individual who poured deeply into each life he touched. Dave never knew a stranger. He knew who he was and what he believed, and he knew he would go home to Jesus.
David is preceded in death by his parents Russell and Mary Ellen Shannon, his in-laws Paul and Martha Martin, his brothers-in-law, Nevin Martin and Jay Martin and Jay’s wife Ann Smith.
He is survived by his wife Lisa A (Martin) Shannon, his two daughters Sarah Shannon and Libby Shannon, and his grandson Rusty Shannon. He is also survived by his sister Sharon (David) Christopher, and their two children Mike Christopher and Tiffany McGill, his sisters-in-law Joan Martin and Julia Smith. He viewed Dan Smith and Alan Shultz as brothers. He had numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
All are invited to join a Celebration of Life service honoring Dave on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2025 at THE NAZ CHURCH, 4770 Hoover Rd. Grove City, OH 43123. Visitation hours are 4pm-6pm with the service following at 6pm.
