John Shilling

July 2, 1947 — February 13, 2024

John Robert Shilling, age 76, of Mount Sterling, Ohio passed away at home surrounded by his family and his beloved dog on February 13, 2024. He was born on July 2, 1947, in Tarentum, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Ohio in Meigs County and graduated from Vermilion High School, Columbus State Community College with an Associates Degree in Computer Science and from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics.

John was most proud of his family and celebrating their accomplishments, serving in the Air Force in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in 7 quarters, earning his private pilot’s license, being a member of MENSA, starting his company Drainage Plows Inc., and creating a website in early 2000s called Ask-It-Here that grew to over 4,000 members. He cherished overseeing the family farm, tending to the ponds and wildlife area, and enjoyed spending moments there alongside his grandchildren.

He will be missed for his: optimistic viewpoints, crazy ideas, adventurous spirit, love of genealogy, vast knowledge of World War II, cosmic theories, love of nature, daily Jeopardy knowledge/wins, but most of all his humor and entertaining stories.

He is preceded in death by his parents Miles A. Shilling and Evelyn M. (Shilling) Burkey, and sister Judy (Shilling) Larizza.

John leaves behind his devoted wife Sue of 54 years; daughter Sara (Shilling) Scott; son, Brian Shilling (Kate); grandchildren, Emma Danielsson, Lily Danielsson, John Shilling, and Nick Shilling; sisters, Linda (Shilling) Francis and Vivian (Shilling) Hamilton; his Golden Retriever, Captain; and other family and dear friends.

John will be laid to rest in Pleasant Cemetery in Mount Sterling, Ohio. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to allow family and friends to gather and share memories. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to plant a tree in his honor or make a donation to an organization making a positive difference such as the Grove City Cancer Thrift Shop.
