Joseph (Joe) Sheets, Loving husband of Carolyn, passed away May 25, 2013 at his home place, with Carolyn at his side to comfort him. Joe was born November 1, 1924 the son of the late Ernest and Lulu (Dennis) Sheets, also preceded in death by brother Turney and sister-in-law Jean Sheets.
He is survived by loving wife, Carolyn (Allison) Sheets who he married July 12, 1959; nephews Max (Peggy), special nephew Terry (Vickie) Sheets, special sister-in-laws Ruth Goldsberry, Judy (Roger) Binkley; niece and nephew Vickie and Chuck Stevens; special traveling buddies Jim and Becky Dixon, also Bob and Judy Meenach; cousins Adrian, Carrol (Jeannie) Liston, survived by many nieces and nephews.
Joe graduated from Monroe School, right after graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving 3 ½ years at Guam, Marianas Islands. His military honors include Asiatic Pacific Bronze Medal Star, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, China Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Expert Rifleman Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. After he was discharged from the Service, Joe enrolled at Wilmington College studying to become a doctor.
Joe was a member at The Five Points Methodist Church, Amvets Honor Guard Post 2256, member of the Circleville Leatherneck Marine Corps League Detachment 830, also member of The Mt. Sterling American Legion Post 417; and Monumental Association.
Joe’s hobbies was doing art work and had painted several pictures, going to “The Indy 500”, a fan of Nascar, he and Carolyn has done quite a bit of traveling into other Countries as well as The Good Old USA.
A Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at the PORTER-TIDD FUNERAL HOME, Mt. Sterling. Pastor Jim Ferrell will officiate with the interment following in Mulhenburg Cemetery. The Circleville Amvets Post 2256 will perform a military service at the gravesite. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, May 29th from 4 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family will also receive friends one hour prior to time of funeral service. Everyone is welcome to come to the Five Points Township House for refreshments following the graveside committal.
