Steve McGath, age 64 passed away on October 18, 2012 in his home in Casa Grande, AZ. He was the son of the late Fred and Donna McGath of Mt. Sterling. He was a 1966 graduate of the Plains High, Mt. Sterling.
Steve served in the Army from 1967 to 1970 and in the Air Force from 1972 to 1980. He served one year in Vietnam. He was an expert marksman with small arms and a sharpshooter with the M14 rifle. He also was a master crew chief on UH-1N and HH-1H helicopters. He received honors for an unprecedented safety record to more than 99,000 accident-free flying hours. His unit received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and he also received the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and National Defense Medal as well as Commendation Medals from the Army and Air Force. He was Honorably discharged from both services.
Preceded in death by his parents, baby sister Carol, great nephew Scott (17) on 9-25-2012; all of his grandparents, aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years Judy, his daughter Kathy Necaise and granddaughter Cheyenne of Lumberton, Mississippi; his sister Cheryl (Sherry) Slagle and husband Ken of Yellow Springs, Ohio; nephew Brian and Theresa of Battlefield, Missouri. He also had many step-children and grandchildren in Arizona.
In keeping with his wishes cremation was requested. A graveside Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 29th of 2013 at 10:00 am in the Dennison Chapel Cemetery. The Circleville Amvets Post #2256 will perform a military service in Steve’s honor. All are welcome to attend.
